“To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it.”
– Kurt Vonnegut
I remember learning the basics of carving and shaping wood as a young boy at my Grandfather’s knee. Time and again his lesson was punctuated with “there is no such thing as too much sanding”. For many years since I have enjoyed the process of nailing things together and sometimes they actually looked and functioned as intended!!
In 2013 my wife and I moved into our home in Stillwater Lake, and I immediately took possession of the garage turning it into my “workshop”. A lack of spare and recreational time for the following years meant any dreams I may have had to actually create something original were put on hold. What I did have was the desire to learn, so as my wife can attest, I would spend hours watching videos and reading about wood turning and finishing techniques.
Then at the end of 2019 my work life changed dramatically which was followed in short order by the Covid lockdowns of early 2020. It was March of 2020 that I purchased my lathe and the basic tools I needed to begin to follow a desire I had dreamt about for years.
My Father, an artist for his whole life, once told me that an artist, in my case a craftsman, cannot be afraid of the garbage pile. So many of the pieces I have attempted have ended up on the kindling pile. It is my sincere hope that what is left over appeals to you and that you will honour my work by displaying it in your world.
